Prosecutor: New Brunswick Man Shot Dead In Car

A 20-year-old Somerset County man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting over the weekend, authorities said.

John Santanna of Bound Brook was charged with first-degree murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, and second-degree possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Director Anthony A. Caputo of the New Brunswick Police Department.

At 1:18 a.m. on Feb. 27, while on patrol, New Brunswick police officers found Jose Medero, 51, of New Brunswick who had sustained a gunshot wound, according to Ciccone and Caputo. Medero was pronounced dead at the scene. 

An investigation by Detective Elfi Martinez of the New Brunswick Police Department and Detective Sean Sullivan of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office determined that Santanna shot Medero while the victim was seated in his vehicle near Seaman Street and Remsen Avenue.

A motive for the shooting has not been disclosed.

Santanna was being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center pending a pre-trial detention hearing in Superior Court.

The investigation is active and continuing.
